The German Society for Epidemiology
- is an independent scientific professional society
- represents epidemiology in research and teaching
- emerged from the German Working Group Epidemiology (DAE) in 2005
- cooperates with a number of related professional societies by exchange of experience, pursuit of common goals or in organising joint workshops and conferences
- maintains close contacts in particular with the German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometrics, and Epidemiology (GMDS), the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP), the International Biometric Society - German Region (IBS-DR) as former founding organisations of the DAE.
Organisational structure
The DGEpi currently (3/2011) has more than 520 members from all over Germany and neighboring countries such as Austria and Switzerland. The Society holds annual scientific conferences, often in conjunction with other professional societies. Moreover, the 16 DGEpi working groups organize workshops and a broad range of own activities. The working groups are the driving forces of the DGEpi, they are strongly involved in all aspects of the Society´s activities. For a full list of working groups (in German) see here.
The Society issues statements concerning scientific matters as well as health policy questions that touch upon the epidemiological expertise of the DGEpi. Guidelines on Good Epidemiologic Practice were developed and are regularly updated.
International links
The DGEpi is linked with the European Epidemiology Federation representing the European epidemiologic societies within the International Epidemiological Association IEA. Individual DGEpi members hold memberships with other international epidemiologic societies such as the SER in the USA. The official EEF contact person for the DGEpi is Prof. Eva Grill, Zwickau.
History
The German Working Group Epidemiology (DAE) existed until 2005 and was a consortium of the three professional societes in Germany active in the field: the German Society for Medical Informatics, Biometrics, and Epidemiology (GMDS), the German Society for Social Medicine and Prevention (DGSMP), and the International Biometric Society - German Region (IBS-DR).
In the year 2004, 65% of the members of the German Working Group Epidemiology (DAE) ballot voted for the foundation of a new independent professional society. Following this ballot and a review of fiscal requirements, the executive board of the German Working Group Epidemiology (DAE) prepared all necessary steps for the foundation of the German Society for Epidemiology. Since the official registration of the German Society for Epidemiology (DGEpi) in the register of associations in Hannover in September 2005, the DGEpi is a society with its office in Hannover, attached to Prof. Lothar Kreienbrock´s institute.
